Our Origin Story
Sim worked for years as a highly skilled cement finisher but never forgot his roots. He was a bona fide Black Ranchero. From his famous cowboy hats, gaudy boots, and wrangler jeans. He loved participating in local rodeos and parades where his grandchildren could wave to him in crowds or see him proudly riding on tv. He was a mentor, father figure, and pillar to boys around San Diego. He often coordinated camping and hunting trips for young men in his neighborhood. He was a family man who supported his wife and kids’ endeavors. Sim’s dream was to own a ranch of his own that he could retire on. His dedication and hard work paid off.
Sarah was a well-respected educator and principal within the San Diego Unified School District for years. She was a champion for youth enrichment opportunities and community service. She is known to have advocated for accessible school bus routes in underserved communities and existing programs that allow for children to enjoy field trips to Old Town, Balboa Park, and various camps. She valued family and always used her knowledge and resources to care for those around her.
While Sim was looking for a new stable to house his horse, he came across a ranch for sale in the Tijuana River Valley. He spoke with his sister Sarah about his vision, and she helped him immediately make an offer on the land. They raised the capital and purchased our ranch in 1980 with the goal of long-term provision for our families. In purchasing this land, they also indirectly provided our family with a safe place to convene and unearth purpose. The Ranch was often used as a fun work setting for young men and women to come and learn life skills while being exposed to experiences unique to an agricultural upbringing. Many of those kids learned to drive a stick from riding a tractor, how to construct with their own hands, and how to care for other living beings. We've always valued hard work and connecting with the natural world. We cherish the opportunity to extend that experience throughout our community.
Sim and Sarah are no longer with us; we honor them as ancestors who began the journey. We are now taking the torch and expanding their vision and dreams. We hope you will reach out or stop by to see the exciting things coming out of S&S Friendly Ranch.
